Is off-grid right for you?

Power for rural homes and sheds

Off-grid solar can suit properties where there is no existing network connection or where a stand-alone supply is being considered. A rural home, farm shed or workshop each has different energy needs, so the system starts with a proper assessment rather than a standard package.

For properties already connected to the grid, solar with battery storage may be a different option. Battery backup and a fully off-grid supply are not the same thing.

Before equipment

Understand every load the system must supply

We look at what runs, when it runs and what needs to operate together. Existing usage records help, while new properties need a considered appliance and equipment schedule.

  • Daily energy: lighting, refrigeration, hot water and other routine use.
  • Peak and start-up loads: pumps, motors, tools and heating or cooling equipment.
  • Seasonal changes: winter generation and periods of higher demand.
  • Future needs: additional buildings, appliances or equipment.

These details determine both the energy capacity and power output the system needs.

System design

Solar, batteries and inverter working together

The panels need to produce enough energy for daytime use and battery charging. The battery must support the intended overnight loads, while the inverter needs to handle the equipment's power demand.

Winter sunlight, battery operating limits and the installation location all influence the design. We explain the proposed system's capabilities and limitations so you know what it can run.

Every battery installation we complete includes full-home blackout protection. With a stand-alone system, ongoing power availability still depends on the system design, stored energy, sunlight, demand and any generator support.

Supply resilience

Plan for cloudy periods and higher demand

Extended low-sunlight periods can reduce battery charging. Generator integration may be appropriate where supply needs to continue through these conditions or where occasional loads exceed the normal energy budget.

We assess the generator connection and control requirements as part of the design. Fuel, maintenance, noise and operating responsibilities need consideration alongside solar and battery capacity.

Living off-grid

Handover, monitoring and ongoing care

At handover we explain the controls, monitoring, battery state of charge and any generator operation. We also explain how appliance use affects the available energy, especially during winter or prolonged cloudy weather.

Equipment needs to be maintained according to its requirements. Our upgrades and maintenance service can assess existing solar equipment and performance concerns.

How it works

Installation steps

  1. 1

    Discuss the property

Tell us what needs power, the location and any existing equipment.

  2. 2

    Assess loads and site

We review appliances, peak demand, seasonal use and installation space.

  3. 3

    Design and written quote

Receive a system scope with the operating assumptions explained.

  4. 4

    Confirm site requirements

We agree equipment locations, access and any generator integration.

  5. 5

    Install and test

Our licensed team installs and commissions the stand-alone system.

  6. 6

    Operating handover

We explain monitoring, load management and equipment care.

Pricing

What affects the installed cost

Off-grid systems are quoted from a load and site assessment, not a fixed package price. The quote sets out the solar, battery and inverter equipment, installation work and any generator integration. Supply expectations and design assumptions are discussed before you proceed. Any incentive eligibility is checked for the proposed equipment and installation.

FAQs

Common questions

What is an off-grid solar system?

An off-grid system supplies a property without relying on an electricity network connection. Solar panels, battery storage and an inverter work together to meet the load. A generator may also be part of the design for extended low-sunlight periods or higher demand.

How do you size an off-grid system?

We assess daily energy use, peak demand, appliance start-up loads and seasonal changes. Solar and battery capacity are selected together, considering winter conditions and how any generator will support the system.

Can off-grid solar run a rural home or shed?

It can be designed for either, but a shed with occasional lighting has very different needs from a home with heating, pumps and appliances. We assess what you want to run and how often before recommending equipment.

Will I need a generator?

That depends on your loads and the required level of supply resilience. A generator may be appropriate for extended cloudy weather or unusual demand. We discuss the trade-offs during design rather than promise that solar and batteries alone will cover every condition.

Can I take an existing grid-connected system off-grid?

Not by simply disconnecting it. Standard grid-connected equipment may not operate independently or manage an off-grid battery and generator. We need to inspect your equipment and assess the loads, safety requirements and any network arrangements.

Does off-grid solar need maintenance?

Yes. Monitoring, battery health, electrical connections and any generator need ongoing attention according to the equipment requirements. We explain the relevant checks and operating guidance at handover.
